So that scores from a wide variety of different subjects can be aggregated on a common scale, the raw scores are subjected to a process called scaling. This enables all students to be correctly and fairly ranked for university and TAFE entrance. Scaling is carried out under the direction of the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) on behalf of the universities and TAFE SA.

Go to the SATAC publications page for more information about scaling.

The Tertiary Entrance Rank

A university aggregate is then calculated for students who have completed the SACE requirements. A tertiary entrance rank (TER) is then calculated from the university aggregate. This ranking (known by other names in the other Australian states) is used by all universities in Australia as the primary selection mechanism for all undergraduate courses. Other subject prerequisites may apply in certain courses.
